Parsons The New School of Design Lecture

Here's my newest piece. The photo doesn't quite show all of the different colors in the progression of the gradation throughout the piece, but close. I feel the yellows look similar in the photo, where with the naked eye the equal progression is more evident.

I haven't posted anything in a while, my apologies. This piece has been in the works for some time now and it has finally wrapped up. It's difficult to see the scale of the piece here, but it's 4 feet by 3 feet. So quite large. I'm very happy with how this piece came out.

"Matt Mignanelli was born in 1983 in Rhode Island and now lives and works in New York as an illustrator and exhibiting artist. He graduated with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. Since then he has participated in an impressive number of exhibitions across the USA, Europe and Australia and was recently awarded first prize in both the Hawaii Publisher’s Association Award and the Society of Professional Journalism Award, his work having been featured in publications such as Dazed and Confused, Time Out and the New York Press to name but a few. In his short career Mignanelli has already gained prestige and respect from the art and design world, interviewed regularly as an inspirational, globally acclaimed artist by publications like IdeaFixa Magazine, Juxtapoz.com, Fecalface.com and RevolutionArt Magazine.

Mignanelli’s work draws inspiration from emotion, energy, pattern and light and his vivid palette is influenced by the neon nightscapes that populate his urban surroundings. His work displays skill, precision and sophistication of style and are highly aesthetic. There is a feel of the comic book about his pieces, a mix of joyful colour and pleasure with darkness, fear and foreboding; many portray big chunky shapes dripped on by blobs of colour, all juicy, liquid and dessert-like. His pieces are made up of super-smooth flat blocks of colour in acrylic, latex and ink that on closer inspection reveal the detailed brush-work of the artist. The modern imagery within the work, Mignanelli’s personal narratives, mixed with his traditional painterly approach creates an interesting visual juxtaposition."

Here is my newest piece. This is based upon growth, energy, and light. I've been observing the neon glow within the city at night, which is making for an interesting exploration into color, form, and brush strokes. It's really forcing me to push my work.

There is a large fundraising opening party at the Urban Outfitters Headquarters on Saturday night where the work will be auctioned off along with Shepard Fairey & Adam Wallacavage.

I was recently asked to donate an edition of 25 limited edition prints to benefit Paine's Park
http://www.painesparkproject.org, a new skatepark down in Philly. This will be shown down in Philly at the Urban Outfitter's Headquarters along with Shepard Fairey, Adam Wallacavage, and some of the folks from Space 1026.

This was my first ever screen print, and very possibly my last. It came out quite cool in the end and I may possibly have some AP's available for sale soon. I couldn't have done it without the hours of help from my brother http://www.thinkagm.com

This latest piece draws upon memories from childhood. Growing up in Rhode Island, The Ocean State, always being around the ocean and fisherman during the summer months. We would buy lobsters right off the docks from these rugged men. Their lifestyle and persona always fascinated me and stay vivid in my memories.
